Frankfurt am Main/Hamburg, 14 November, 2018: Around 110 lubricant experts from science and industry attended the fifth GETLUB Tribology and Lubricant Conference organized by FVA, the German Research Association for Drive Technology. The central topic of the event on 6 and 7 September in Hamburg was the optimal lubrication of drivetrains. This is critically important for the development and low-friction, damage-free operation of transmissions. For the first time, GETLUB opened its doors to an international audience and also dedicated a separate session to the subject of electromobility.
Lubricants Development in Transition
The conference was opened with presentations on the future of the drive and the associated changes in lubricant development. The central focus was on the question of how the mobility transformation will affect the lubrication of drives and the lubricant industry. In his opening presentation "The future of drivetrains in the complex environment of the energy & transport transition," Dr. Wolfgang Warnecke, Chief Scientist, Mobility for Shell Global Solutions Deutschland GmbH, outlined the path to a world with emissions-free drives and ventured a glimpse into the future of alternative fuels for individual transportation segments.
Warnecke is certain: "We must prepare ourselves for totally emissions-free mobility. This also has significant consequences for the lubricant industry. GETLUB brings together leading international experts from industry and science to discuss issues and jointly develop solutions for the challenges of the future."
Digitalization, Sustainability, and Electromobility are Changing the Lubricants Industry
In his keynote presentation, Dr. Lutz Lindemann, member of the executive board of Fuchs Petrolub S.E and the FVA board of directors, described the effects of the trends of digitalization, sustainability, and electromobility on the development of lubricants and emphasized the importance of networks and joint research: "This year's GETLUB conference was a successful event that highlighted many new topics. Increasingly, new technological challenges such as e-mobility or questions about digitalization are coming to the fore, that also have a significant impact on the lubricants industry. The discussions among the participants are an important element; they provide new impulses and suggestions for projects and stimulate ideas with regard to future topics. The FVA's unique network makes it a strong research community that is always at the forefront of new topics.”
A total of four main topics offered the approximately 110 participants a broad spectrum of presentations from industry and science. Around a third of the 21 presentations were related to current research topics from the FVA network. The main topics dealt with lubricant influence during production and operation, lubrication of transmission applications, electromobility, lubricant monitoring including specifications and guidelines, and lubrication and lubricant development.
Joint Research Promotes Progress
The lubricant as a design element receives very broad and intense attention in the research and development landscape. The technical and scientific breadth of the presentations reflects the complexity that results from the interdisciplinary approach to tribological issues. With the GETLUB conference, the powerful FVA network offers a platform for discussing issues relating to tribology and for gaining new insights for practical applications. "Future changes and challenges such as new technologies, new materials, the sustainability of products, digitalization, and electromobility require new solutions. With its network of research and industry, the FVA offers excellent opportunities in the field of joint industrial research," stated Christian Kunze, deputy managing director of Forschungsvereinigung Antriebstechnik e.V. (FVA). Since its foundation in 1968, the FVA has overseen more than 400 projects related to lubrication in the field of drive technology, promoting progress across the entire branch as well as innovations in its member companies.
